Authorized in 1920 for the 100th anniversary. Late in 1921, however, about 6,000 were made with the figures "2x2" stamped on the obverse, an emblem from the state flag signifying Alabama’s admission as 22nd state in the Union. This "2x2" variety is more valuable than the plain version but in mint condition, both are equally difficult to acquire. The obverse features William Bibb, the first Governor and T.E. Kilby, governor in 1921. This was the first time a living politician was portrayed on a U.S. coin. This was one of four half dollars in this series designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, the wife of James Earl Fraser, who created the Buffalo nickel. The coins’s reverse recalls the state seal, an eagle upon the U.S. shield with a ribbon and the state motto: "Here We Rest." The Alabama half dollar is available, however, in MS 64 or better these coins are difficult to find. Alabama halves often were heavily circulated during the Depression, when Americans were forced to spend all manner of coin. As evidence, only 3% of this issue has been certified as mint state.
