In 1791 Vermont became the 14th state to join the Union. Congress authorized this coin in 1925. The obverse bears a portrait of Ira Allen. The reverse depicts a cougar or catamount a symbol of Vermont's mountainous terrain. Congress authorized 40,000 Vermont half dollars; the Mint melted nearly 12,000, leaving a net mintage of 28,162. The design is features a very high relief and sharp detail on both sides. A Vermont is scarce in any condition. Value $800-3,000 |
