Among other deeds In 1775 he led an expedition that blazed the Wilderness Road through Cumberand Gap, paving the way for the founding of Boonesboro, the first white settlement in Kentucky. The frontiersman holds a musket in one hand and a peace treaty in the other. The chief holds a tomahawk. The coin was designed by Augtistus Lukeman. Congress authorized 600,000 pieces but the net mintage was only about 87,000. A complete set is comprised of 16 different varieties minted at all three mints from 1934 through 1938. Because of the enormous popularity of its subject, this is an extremely well received coin. It is obtainable and highly desirable. However, a complete set is quite a challenge. Certain varieties have very low mintages and many had less than 10,000 pieces made . Value $60 - $225 |
