1935-39 Arkansas Centennial Half Dollar |
Mintage: 85,301 In 1936 Congress authorized a special half dollar to mark the Arkansas centennial. The U.S. Mint produced it at all three mints from 1935 through 1939. A complete set would include 15 different coins. Only one coin, the 1935-P,has a net mintage of more than 10,000. Many are well below 5,000. The coin’s obverse shows an 1836 Indian chief and a 1936 American ‘Miss Liberty’. The reverse features an eagle perched atop a globe from which rays are beaming. In the back-ground is the diamond-shaped, star-studded,emblem from the state flag. Four stars surround the word ARKANSAS, denoting the four different nations under which the state evolved ( Spain, France, the United States and the Confederate States). In 1936, the Mint also produced a second Arkansas half dollar with a different obverse design, the Robinson-Arkansas.The low relief makes it elusive in the highest uncirculated grades. As a type coin, it's moderately available, but pristine examples of lower-mintage pieces are very seldom encountered. Value $70-$1,225 |
