1936 Wisconsin Centennial Half Dollar

1936 Wisconsin Centennial Half Dollar

Mintage 25,015

Struck to commemorate and finance the celebration of Wisconsin’s 100th year since establishment as a territory in 1836, the "4th day of July..." is the day Henry Dodge became Territorial Governor. A strong feature of this coin is the pick axe and a pile of lead. The lead mines attracted people to this region in the 1820’s. The American badger, the state animal, is on the reverse. The three arrows represent the Black Hawk War of the 1830’s and the olive branch symbolizes peace. The original designs were drawn by David Parsons, a University of Wisconsin art student. They were later modified by New York City artist Benjamin Hawkins. The tiny "H" under the badger is his legacy. Congress did not specify the mintage and the mint produced a mere 25,015 examples and none were returned unsold. The designs are not cluttered and the technical quality of most Wisconsin halves is superb. The coins’ relief is relatively high. They are fairly inexpensive compared to other commemoratives with similar mintage's .

Value $300-1100
